The MG5 is a 100% fully electric estate from the Chinese-owned British car manufacturer MG. Practical, efficient, and somewhat unusual in the electric car leasing market, this is a car to consider when you want three simple things from your electric vehicle: range, simplicity, and comfort. 

Key highlights

The biggest and most obvious highlight here is the MG5’s unusual body style. The fact that this is an estate – and an electric estate – is noteworthy. The EV leasing market is dominated by family-sized SUVs and fancy saloons, so this more compact, down-to-earth, aerodynamic estate is a breath of fresh air.

Another highlight is that MG haven’t compromised on technology when developing their first fully electric estate. Like the petrol-powered models that came before it, the MG5 boasts the impressive MG Pilot Driver Assist Package. This provides you with some handy features to enhance the on-road experience, like adaptive cruise control, lane change detection, and automatic braking. 

Performance & range

The MG5 is marketed as a long-range vehicle. And it is. In fact, in a combination of different driving conditions, you’ll get an average of 250 miles to a single charge. Range-wise, the MG5 comes in just a little shy of MG’s other electric car, the ZS, which can travel for an extra 23 miles before needing a pit stop. However, with an extended range comes an extended charge time. This is where the MG5 takes the top spot on the leaderboard, charging to 80% in 61 minutes compared to 63 for the ZS.

Of course, if you’re considering the MG5 as a city explorer or urban runaround, you’ll get more bang for your buck when it comes to range at around 334 miles. It’ll do about 279 miles on rural roads.

Similar models

If you’re after an electric estate, there aren’t many other choices. There's the Audi e-tron or Mercedes-Benz EQC or ther is the fully electric option is a version of the Porsche Taycan known as the Turismo. However, performance-wise, the MG ZS is very similar, which is good news if you’re keen on leasing an MG electric car. Range, battery size, acceleration, and of course in-car technology are all quite alike, wrapped up in a compact SUV’s body.
