It’s technically not actually a car, as it’s classified as a large electric quadricycle, meaning 16 year-olds can drive it with the right licence. It’s perfect transport for city dwellers looking for a two-seat urban runabout.

The Citroen AMI is a compact, light and low-range electric two-seater designed solely to be used in towns and cities. It’s far smaller and cheaper than other small electric cars, but then it technically isn’t a car: lacking much of the modern safety equipment of other EVs, it’s actually classified as a quadricycle .
Don’t let that put you off, however. If you need funky and cheap to run transport to get you around busy urban environments it’s completely fit for purpose, and one of the most affordable four-wheeled ways to get around. It’s still far safer than two-wheeled options, keeps you warm and dry, and gives you a decent amount of storage for small shopping trips.
Citroen AMI performance and range
The Citroen AMI is not built for speed or long distances, as the figures show. With just 8hp powering the wheels its top speed is restricted to 28mph, while its 5.5kWh battery allows for a range of up to 47 miles.
That’s enough to deal with congested city streets, however, particularly when you consider cities such as London have blanket 20mph speed limits. Also, with such a small battery charging is easy - a domestic three-pin socket will give the Citroen AMI a full charge in around three hours.

There really isn’t much that compares to the Citroen AMI, especially now that Renault no longer sells the similar Twizy. If anything the AMI’s closest rivals are electric scooters or bicycles.
