GRIDSERVE powers up UK’s first shared eHGV charging station at Nissan Sunderland plant

GRIDSERVE, the UK’s most used electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is proud to announce the launch of a pioneering electric Heavy Goods Vehicle (eHGV) charging facility at the world-leading Nissan Sunderland car plant.

This £1.4m facility, the first on-site shared eHGV charging depot of its kind in the UK automotive industry, has been designed to support the electrification of Nissan Sunderland’s supply chain logistics. Launching with 10 High Power eHGV charging bays, the charging depot will initially support a fully-electric fleet of 25 trucks that will travel over 1.5 million miles each year, collecting parts from across the UK and delivering finished vehicles to the Port of Tyne.

Thanks to the support of its haulage partners Fergusons, Yusen, and BCA, Nissan Sunderland predicts this initiative could save the equivalent of 1,500 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The Nissan Sunderland eHGV charging depot marks another landmark location in the GRIDSERVE Electric Freightway rollout, a project made possible by the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

Nissan Sunderland, long revered as a jewel in the automotive manufacturing landscape, continues to lead the industry in both productivity and sustainability. Its EV36Zero programme, a £3bn investment in partnership with battery producer Envision AESC and Sunderland City Council, will see the plant evolve further into a world-leading EV manufacturing ecosystem. This will bring together electric vehicles, zero carbon energy and battery manufacturing in preparation for a decarbonised future.
