The BYD Dolphin is a brand new small electric car that’ll stand out for its quirky name and distinctive design. But it also has a spacious and classy interior, a comfortable driving experience and a strong range for the money.
Key highlights of the BYD Dolphin
The BYD Dolphin isn’t an aquatic mammal, it’s a distinctive new electric hatchback that’s affordable to buy or lease. Despite being one of the cheapest electric cars for sale you get quite a lot for your money with the Dolphin - not least a name that’ll please the children.
With a spacious interior featuring clever design elements and upmarket touches, a surprising amount of standard equipment and impressive technology including an electrically rotating touchscreen, the BYD Dolphin looks great value for money.
With a choice of power outputs, battery sizes and trim levels to suit all budgets, there’s something for everyone with the BYD Dolphin. Throw in a comfortable drive and long-range capability and this is a small car with big ambitions.
BYD Dolphin performance and range
BYD offers the Dolphin with two different battery sizes and three power outputs. The entry-level BYD Dolphin Active model gets 93bhp which is sufficient for urban use, but stepping up to the BYD Dolphin Boost brings nearly double the power (173bhp) for punchier performance out of town.
Both the Active and Boost models come with a 45kWh battery, although range figures for these versions have yet to be revealed, 60kW fast charging is standard on both models.
BYD has revealed technical details for the top-spec BYD Dolphin Comfort. This gets a more powerful 201bhp motor for a 0-62mph time of seven seconds, while the larger 60kWh battery pack gives an official WLTP range of 261 miles - estimated at 222 miles in the real world.
The Comfort model also benefits from faster 89kW rapid charging, sufficient for a 10-80% charge in just over 40 minutes.
