The BYD Seal is a brand new electric car alternative to the Tesla Model 3. With a striking design inside and out, premium brand fit-and-finish and a good driving experience, the Seal also looks great value to lease.
Key highlights of the BYD Seal
The BYD Seal is the third model from the fast-growing Chinese brand, and the second model with an aquatic-themed name following the smaller BYD Dolphin.
The Seal is the largest and most capable model from BYD yet, with more space than many similar alternatives - enough for five adults - and a good-sized boot and ‘frunk’ - that’s a front under bonnet storage area to you and me. With a focus on cutting-edge technology, the Seal also has an interior with an upmarket feel.
Key highlights of the BYD Seal include a cobalt-free LFP battery designed in-house, a 15.6-inch touchscreen that rotates from portrait to landscape, and ‘frequency selective damping’ that constantly adjusts to the road surface to balance comfort and handling.
BYD Seal performance and range
Currently the BYD Seal is available to lease in two versions: a single motor, rear-wheel drive model and dual-motor, four-wheel drive model.
The single motor version puts out 308bhp, enough for a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds. Upgrading to the dual-motor models gives you 523bhp and a faster 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds.
The single motor BYD Seal is capable of an official WLTP range of up to 354 miles, while the dual motor model’s figure is 323 miles. That translates to 301 miles and 275 miles respectively as real-world estimates. Both have the same 82.5kWh battery pack.
Both have maximum rapid charging rates of 150kW, able to replenish the battery from 10-80% in around 37 minutes.

The BYD Seal’s main alternative is the ever-popular Tesla Model 3. However there are other options to consider, including the striking Hyundai IONIQ 6 and the great to drive BMW i4.
