One of the newest of Hyundai’s electric vehicles to hit the roads, the IONIQ 5 is already a game-changer. It has an impressive range, and the standard cars come with high-spec interiors. There’s a host of innovative infotainment and connection features. This is a comfortable family hatch with overtones of an SUV, and it straddles those markets surprisingly well.
Overall, this is a spacious, driver-friendly vehicle that is smooth and responsive – and it stands out from the crowd thanks to its design.
Key highlights of the Hyundai Ioniq 5
While Hyundai may not typically be associated with producing exciting cars, the IONIQ 5 ushers in a new era of vehicles that have kerb appeal and offer a memorable driving experience. An ex-Lamborghini designer was involved in the car’s creation and it’s easy to see the effect, including an iconic curving solar-panelled roof and futuristic yet retro design.
There’s an eco-friendly interior, parts of which are made from recycled plastic
bottles, and gadget lovers will appreciate the tech-centric dashboard. Small touches such as a heated steering wheel make frosty mornings that little bit more bearable. Augmented reality displays mean that navigation directions can be projected onto the windscreen. And then there are the thoughtful touches like fully reclining front seats and footrests, so when the car’s charging you can lie back and relax.
Not that you’ll need to do this for long: the ultra-rapid charger means you can be 80% charged in just 18 minutes, and it only takes 5 minutes to charge up enough to go 62 miles. It’ll be completely recharged in well under an hour. Those are some of the most impressive charging specs on the market, dismissing the reservations many have about turning to electric vehicles.
The IONIQ 5 is stylish, bursting with safety and driver-assistance features, and it’s one of the most efficient choices in EV leasing out there.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 performance and range
With a range of around 250 to over 300 miles depending on spec, the IONIQ 5 is a car that will take you places. It’s also very quick off the mark, reaching 62mph in just over 5 seconds in all-wheel drive form. It’s a car that feels like the future is here now.

The Kia EV6 is a close cousin of the IONIQ 5 and worth a comparison. Volkswagen’s ID4 is a similar vehicle, as is the Skoda Enyaq iV, both of which will be slightly more affordable.

There are a few trim levels to choose from with the Ioniq 5, including Premium, Ultimate, and Namsan. Although the name may suggest otherwise, Premium is actually the entry level model. It has two 12.3-inch displays, part leather upholstery, tinted windows and a sliding centre console. This is combined with 19-inch alloys, chrome side mouldings and a rear-view camera.
The Ultimate edition offers 20-inch alloy wheels, with gloss black detailing on the door mirrors. This combines with dual 12-inch displays, a sliding centre console, electrical seat adjustment, dual-zone climate control and a Bose sound system.
The top-spec version is the Namsan Edition which offers cameras instead of traditional door mirrors, combined with flush door handles and 20-inch wheels. The cabin also has electric front and rear seat adjustment, a sliding centre console, dual 12-inch displays, a head-up display and a sunroof, plus the Bose sound system.
The IONIQ 5 is available in a range of different sizes as discussed earlier, and the range numbers will depend on the option that you choose. The lowest range comes from the IONIQ 5 125kW Premium 58 kWh with 238 miles of official range and a real-world estimate of 202 miles.
There is a long range option in the form of the IONIQ 5 168kW Premium 77 kWh, which offers a massive 315 miles in official range, which translates to around 268 miles of real-world range.
The IONIQ 5 has a maximum charge rate of 225kW, which means it can be charged from 10-80% in just 17 minutes. Simply find one of the high power chargers at one of over 160+ Charging Stations on the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway and you’ll be back on the roads in no time.
