The Smart #1 is a desirable, all-new compact electric car with a spacious interior, lots of clever technology and impressive performance. If you’re looking to lease a small SUV-style EV it’s one that we’d recommend
Key highlights of the Smart #1
Smart is best known as a maker of tiny, low-range electric city cars. But it’s been reborn, with the first new model arriving as a much larger and more high-tech compact electric SUV: the #1 (that’s a hashtag for any non-social media users…).
With a characterful design that stands out from the crowd, the #1 is also much more spacious than Smarts of old, allowing four large adults to get comfortable. Sliding rear seats allow you to maximise boot space, too.
Another key attribute of the Smart #1 is technology. A slick 12.8-inch touchscreen features video game-like graphics and a friendly fox voice assistant that responds to your commands. It’s a fun and polished all-round family car.
Smart #1 performance and range
Three variants of the SUV offer different power outputs. Pro+ and Premium models put out 272bhp through the rear wheels, enough for a 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds.
Opting for the top-spec Brabus model brings a second electric motor for 428bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds.
In terms of range, all models have the same 66kWh battery, but the range varies depending on trim. Pro+ trim promises 260 miles from a charge using WLTP figures, while Premium trim adds a heat pump to increase that to 273 miles. The Brabus model reduces the official figure to 248 miles. The real-world estimate for all three models is 221 miles, 232 miles and 211 miles respectively.
All versions also have a peak rapid charging speed of up to 150kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in as little as 27 minutes.
