If you’re in the market for a family SUV then you’ve got plenty of options but few can offer the versatility, space and comfort of the Mercedes-Benz EQB. You’re probably familiar with its petrol/diesel-powered sibling, the GLB, so let us introduce you to the EQB and why we think it could be the perfect choice for you.
1. It’s got seven seats
The biggest selling point for the EQB is that it comes with the option of seven seats. If you’ve got a big family, then there’s few electric cars that can transport this many people in this type of style and comfort. Impressively, it delivers seven seats without being minibus-sized so it’s both stylish and relatively compact for parking in the multi-storey.
The back two seats are probably best considered for occasional use but fold them down and you’ll get 465 litres of boot space. Fold down the middle row and you’ll get an IKEA-friendly 1,710 litres of boot space.
2. Sit back and relax
As you’d expect from anything that wears the three-pointed star, the EQB is a dream to drive both on long journeys and around town. The ride height gives you a great view of the road while the dashboard and doors are covered in premium, soft-touch materials. The seats are comfortable, too, and it’ll roll over any lumps and bumps on the road without waking up your sleeping children in the back.
3. It’s got five-star safety
If you’ve got your family on board, you want to know that you’re in safe hands… and the Mercedes-Benz EQB is just that. Euro NCAP, the independent safety regulators, give the seven-seat SUV a full five-star rating – well into the 90% scores for passenger safety.
There’s also a raft of safety features as standard, such as active brake assist, lane keep assist, cruise control and active warnings of obstacles when you’re in town. There’s even an optional Urban Guard pack that allows you to keep connected to your EQB remotely, which will let you know if you’re unlucky enough to experience any break-ins or thefts.
4. Enjoy the light show
We’ve mentioned the premium cabin but it’s not just nice materials that make it stand out. There are cool fighter-jet style heaters and ambient lighting that elevates the EQB beyond a run-of-the-mill family SUV.
It hints at the technology available, too. Mercedes has been generous with the kit list, with a slick infotainment system and touchpad, voice controls, reversing camera and the latest smartphone connectivity.
5. There’s enough range for your everyday… and more
Most owners of the EQB will no doubt spend much of the time ferrying family to and from school, as well as to weekend sports matches. But it’s likely you’ll also want to load up the car and go on weekend adventures or visit the extended family - and the EQB is certainly capable of all that.
The 66kWh battery is good for around 250 miles (the exact figure is dependent on if you go for the 300 or 350 power option) and it’s capable of 100kW charging – plenty fast enough to top you up and get you back on the move when you do stop off for a quick coffee and sausage roll with the kids.
