On the market since 2013, the Volkswagen e-Up! is a fully electric version of VW’s enduringly popular Up! city car. Despite its age, the e-Up! has been revised and improved over the years, so it’s still a highly competitive choice among small EVs.
Light and compact with great range for its size, the e-Up! is a fantastic lease option for an everyday company car or family runaround.
Key highlights of the Volkswagen e-Up!
The e-Up! focuses on doing the basics well at an affordable price. It’s relatively plain and simple but it has all the features and accessories you need day-to-day. It might be dinky in size but still has five doors to squeeze in four passengers along with a surprisingly generous 250-litre boot. Ditch the rear passengers and fold the seats down and you’ll get a buggy friendly 923 litres.
In other words, the VW e-Up! is adaptable, practical and straightforward – just the thing for city life.
Volkswagen e-Up! performance & range
The VW e-Up! is primarily built for urban driving, but it’s tougher and more versatile than its size would suggest. With 82 hp and a 37 kWh battery, today’s model offers a substantially improved range of up to 161 miles on a single charge. The e-Up! can accelerate from 0-62mp in a little under 12 seconds, and its top speed is 81 mph (plenty for UK roads). With a tiny turning circle, too, it’s a doddle to zip about city streets in.
Rapid charging is standard with the e-Up!, and although it isn’t the fastest around, the small battery means you’ll be able to replenish the battery from zero to 80% in around 40 minutes. The choice of three driving modes will also help you to manage battery use without having to think about it too much.

The official range of the Volkswagen e-Up! is a respectable 161 miles, with a real world estimate of around 137 miles. The actual range is affected by a number of factors, including the weather, driving style, payload, battery efficiency and more.
There is only one available trim level to choose from for the VW e-Up!, which makes life satisfyingly straightforward. That doesn’t mean it’s sparse, though, with standard climate control, cruise control, heated seats and a reversing camera.
The VW e-Up! can be charged from empty to full on a 7.2kW AC home charger in around 5 hours 30 minutes. As well as charging at home, you can visit one of GRIDSERVE’s 150+ charging stations for a quick stop-off.
The maximum power charger that a VW e-Up! can take is 40kW via a DC CCS charger, and it can go from 20% to 80% in 48 minutes. Stop at one of GRIDSERVE’s 150+ charging stations to charge your e-Up! and be back out on the roads in no time.
When charging your e-Up! at one of GRIDSERVE’s EV charging stations throughout the UK, the price will depend on the type of charger you use and how long you use it for. You can find more information over on the GRIDSERVE pricing page.
The car itself has a warranty of three years or 60,000 as standard, but the battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. Therefore, as the longest lease offered by GRIDSERVE is four years (48 months), the battery will always be covered under warranty for the duration of the lease.
The Volkswagen e-Up! measures in at 3,600mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,607mm in height.
