The Volkswagen ABT e-Transporter was Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ first all-electric van – an aftermarket conversion of its evergreen Transporter model. It offers all the versatility of the popular mid-sized van but with 82 miles of all-electric range for life in the city. Volkswagen isn’t making it any more but there are some still available to lease from the original production run.

Key highlights

The ABT e-Transporter takes everything that’s good about the Transporter and adds electric power. There’s little to no compromise in terms of space with the batteries tucked under the floor – that means you get 6.7m³ in the cargo bay while the payload is still a competitive 996kg and you can tow up to 1,500kg. It’s also available as a standard panel van or kombi, with a second row of seats for passengers. Inside, it’s just like any other VW: modern, practical and well-equipped as standard. 

Performance and range

Replacing the diesel engine is a 37.3kWh battery that will give you 82 miles of range – enough for life around towns and cities while the 50kW-capable charging means you can keep it topped up whenever you stop off. Just like the regular Transporter, the ABT conversion is a joy to drive with an ergonomic driving position and agile handling that helps to make easy work of narrow, busy streets.

While there is limited stock available of the ABT e-Transporter, there are plenty of alternatives in the medium-sized sector. Newer vans like the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, Peugeot e-Expert and Citroen e-Dispatch all offer much greater range, while the Mercedes-Benz eVito may appeal to those wanting a more premium van.
