Tackling EV charging visibility: GRIDSERVE appoints Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen as Chief Visibility Officer

At GRIDSERVE, we’re on a mission, and now we’ve got one of Britain’s most recognisable design legends helping us shout about it. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (yes, the king of maximalism himself) has joined the movement to make our electric vehicle charging locations unmissable, unforgettable, and undeniably visible.

Why? Because even though the UK now hosts almost 87,000 public EV charging points, far too many drivers still underestimate just how widespread the EV charging network truly is. Visibility isn’t just a design flourish; it’s the missing link in accelerating Britain’s shift to sustainable electric mobility.

Hidden in plain sight: the EV charging visibility gap

Our latest research highlights something surprising: more than half of UK adults underestimate the number of public electric vehicle chargers across the country.

And honestly? We can see why.

Outdated motorway signage rules, inconsistent wayfinding, and decades of EV chargers being slumped in the corners of car parks have left many EV charging stations effectively invisible. Drivers know electric vehicle infrastructure is growing, but they’re understandably clueless as to how fast. That lack of visibility and awareness can slow down confidence, EV adoption, and ultimately the UK’s transition to net zero.

Enter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Chief Visibility Officer

To tackle this, we’ve brought in someone who knows a thing or two about making a statement. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has stepped in as our Chief Visibility Officer, helping us explore bold, vibrant new ways to make GRIDSERVE’s award-winning charging infrastructure impossible to miss.

And in his own true, dazzling style, he arrived dressed head to toe in highlighter yellow. If you want to talk about visibility, you might as well embody it.

From suggesting we add a few more flamingos to our Electric Forecourts ®, to hitting the road in a digital, electric ad-van, Laurence’s message is clear: why hide critical net zero infrastructure when we should be celebrating it and being as attention-grabbing as possible?

Why visibility matters for the electric vehicle transition

Visibility is essential in helping the UK accelerate towards an electric future. When EV charging locations are easy to spot, it builds instant confidence. For drivers considering making the change from ICE to EV, reassurance is key to showing that charging is simple and convenient.

Clear, prominent sites reduce range anxiety, help drivers make quick decisions on the road, and turn charging from an uncertain task into an intuitive part of everyday travel. What’s more, on a national level, showcasing the scale of Britain’s charging infrastructure signals real progress towards net zero, demonstrating that high power, reliable, future-ready infrastructure isn’t just being built. It’s ready and waiting to be used.

Leading the charge: GRIDSERVE’s growing sustainable infrastructure

From our award-winning Electric Forecourts® to our rapidly expanding Electric Super Hub network, we’re already redefining what EV charging looks like.

Take our Electric Forecourt® at Stevenage on the A1(M):

24 high power chargers, each up to 360 kW, capable of adding approximately 100 miles in less than 10 minutes are available around the clock, as well as daily access to comfortable lounges and great amenities, like Costa Coffee, to recharge yourself as well as your car.

This isn’t just charging. It’s a whole new type of pit stop, and it deserves to stand out.

Designing the future of EV charging

Partnering with Laurence gives us the opportunity to not only have some fun, but to start a national conversation about EV charging visibility and the driver experience. We want to bring EV charging into the spotlight where it belongs.

A future-ready transport system needs infrastructure that’s not only high-tech and reliable, but also obvious, accessible, and celebrated. We’re looking to drive sustainable transport, support the green energy transition, and make electric vehicles the natural choice for every driver in Britain.

And yes, maybe we’ll consider adding in few flamingos along the way…
